Last year, our website published the article “Games of the nineties and early 2000s,

relevant today” – the beauty of such publications is that even after two or three years, and what is there, and in five to ten years, they will not cease to be relevant…

A year later, the only thing that causes concern is the inability to run your favorite game under a modern operating system and at a comfortable resolution.

In 2020, 86% of windows10 install in gaming computers, and 78% of users used monitors with Full HD resolution and higher. In the early 2000s,

few developers expected that their projects would not cease to be relevant decades later. While preparing this material, I concluded that old games, sorry for the pun, have a future. And let this article be a confirmation of my words.

Cheap Gaming PC

And again, sorry, professional deformation does not allow me to immediately go to the list of games. The editor writes the article of the “Laptops & PCs” section and the permanent author of the “Computer of the Month” column. In April, we examined several typical assemblies of system units, (not) allowing to play modern games. Alas, in connection with the latest world events, the cost of such a group exceeds 40,000 rubles, and in Russia, this amount cannot be called low. You can look more at this in the April issue of “Computer of the Month.”

It is important to clarify: the article deals with assemblies purchased in the store – from new components, with a guarantee. Fortunately, shipping companies’ pick-up points and courier delivery of some computer stores are still open. The “discreteness” of the GeForce GT 1030 and Radeon RX 550 class perform even worse, much worse.

And what about those people who need a new system unit for entertainment? The option “wait for better times” operates exactly until the computer hardware stupidly fails – alas, sooner or later, everyone faces this. And it can also happen that the notorious better times simply will not come. And now the thought dawns on you that those very best times are over.

I will give an elementary example – my own. Children study at home; they always need a computer. I work from home; I need a laptop all the time. My wife also requires a computer because in order not to go crazy while sitting locked up, you need to do at least something. So it turns out that one laptop or desktop in our difficult times is simply not enough. One of the options in this situation would be to buy a second inexpensive system unit or laptop.

You can advise those in need to explore the offers of various Internet flea markets. So, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti bought from hands will be a priori better than the GeForce GT 1030. It will introduce access control in some regions, and the situation is unlikely to improve shortly. And only electronics and computer hardware stores, I repeat, still work and deliver goods using courier services and transport companies. Perhaps it makes no sense to invest in an expensive system now. It might be better to take a relatively cheap base for future upgrades.

What am I doing? On the one hand, the assembly below will allow you to build up power in the future without changing all the hardware. On the other hand, it will pull all those games that we will consider below.

Ryzen 5 3400G vs. Ryzen 3 3200G review came out on our website – the performance of these chips’ integrated graphics depends very much on the used RAM. It must operate in dual channel mode and must have a sufficient frequency of 3000+ MHz. Such memory costs on average 1,000 rubles more than standard DDR4-2400 / 2666 modules. Of course, a chip with integrated graphics is to build AMD. For our purposes, the Ryzen 3 3200G is quite suitable: this processor is only 200-500 rubles more expensive than the Ryzen 3 2200G, so I see no reason to save, as they say, on matches. But for the Ryzen 5 3400G, you will already have to pay off almost 12,000 rubles.

For the Intel platform, the processor was chos3 4-core Core i3-9100F – it is cheap (compared to other Core i3s) but does not have integrated graphics. So you need to buy a video card for it. The table shows the GeForce GT 1030; you should take the version with GDDR5 memory. However, the Radeon RX 550 is also suitable for this assembly – these are discrete accelerators of a similar level.

The motive is simple – to save money by choosing a system for a future upgrade of the graphics subsystem. If you select the Core i3-9100F, it will eventually allow you to install a Radeon RX 570 class video card into the system. Whether it is a new accelerator or a used one – it’s not up to me to decide.

Earlier, we made sure that even the Radeon RX 560 does not pull modern AAA games in Full HD resolution using medium quality graphics. The systems I have proposed will show themselves even worse under the same conditions. If we apply the epithet “game” to them, we will have to talk mainly about undemanding projects to hardware. For this article, I would recommend such well-known games as World of Tanks, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Diablo, Overwatch, Fortnite. Such multiplayer titles boast low system requirements, and the graphics are not the main thing in them. But we will not offer you this; it is too obvious and boring.

This article’s title states that the proposed ten games will run smoothly even on a fragile computer. The other day, in honor of the 5th anniversary of the release of the PC version of GTA V, my colleague Valery Kosikhin tested 49 video cards in it, modern and not so much. Studying the graph shows that the discrete GeForce GT 1030 in 2020 is even ahead of such accelerators as the Radeon R7 370 and GeForce GTX 750 Ti. Meanwhile, the AMD video card will be five years old in June 2015. We are dealing with a renamed (with some reservations) version of the Radeon HD 7850 – a video card that turned eight years old in March of this year! So a system unit with graphics class GeForce GT 1030 is a fragile computer for any 3D games.

You can always buy these games from one or another primary gaming service like Steam. And all of them are Russified, although they cannot do without various tricks. Let me give you an illustrative example.

On Steam, you can purchase the turn-based strategy game Disciples II: Rise of the Elves. The Valve game client honestly warns that the game lacks support for the Russian language. However, at the heart of the Disciples II community, many different guides can help solve this issue. Fortunately, the Steam client itself does not restrict the user in any way.

Brief information:

  • Release date – 2007.
  • The genre is a puzzle shooter.
  • System requirements – Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, video card with DirectX 9 support.
  • Platform – Steam, 259 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 90/100.

Very often, sequels are just a pale shadow of their predecessors. At the same time, they acquire them to gain the same experience as in the original – people want to continue their beloved story. They want to meet again with their favorite fictional characters. Fortunately, it also happens that the sequel is better than the original. Portal 2- a clear example of a perfect sequel: the second part bypassed its predecessor in everything. The game has become larger, more varied, more interesting, funnier – this is how Portal 2 can be briefly described compared to the first part. Also, Valve was able to diversify a rather primitive concept with portals seriously. As a result, even old Gabe himself admitted that Portal 2 is the best Valve game ever. Not Half-Life, mind you. I cannot disagree with this, and some critics boldly include it in the top ten best computer games of humanity.

Wait, but what does the first part have to do with it? “- the reader will exclaim. The first Portal is not like that. In general, the first part looks like a bold experiment, albeit brought to the final release. And yet, acquaintance with the main heroine of the game Chell and the Aperture Science laboratory should start with the passage of the first part. And then switch entirely to Portal 2.

Dead space

Brief information :

  • Release date – 2008.
  • The genre is horror action.
  • System Requirements – Pentium 4, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6800 or better.
  • Platform – Origin, 399 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 86/100.

Science fiction and horror in computer games are a somewhat controversial mixture. However, Dead Space developers managed to create a game that perfectly combines the best elements of both genres. “Dead Space” is loved for its vivid storyline and exciting gameplay. Just what is the refusal of the usual killing of alien creatures – headshots do not work here. Even without a head, a necro-morph is in considerable danger. At the same time, the main character, Isaac Clarke, is not a superhero with superpowers. Therefore, the game teaches you to deal with monsters differently: to shoot off the limbs and trample the foe’s remains that are still dangerous.

The world of Dead Space turned out to be superbly detailed. The game does not reveal all the details. However, a large number of accompanying materials came out with it: pampered fans of the series with comics, and an animated series, and a unique interactive website.

It is not surprising that “Dead Space” has acquired such a large fan base, and after the first part of the game appeared the second and third Dead Space.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Brief information:

  • Release date – 1998.
  • Genre – RPG.
  • System requirements – 1 GHz single-core CPU, 512 MB RAM, OpenGL 2.0 graphics card.
  • Platform – Steam, GOG, 167 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 91/100.

The iconic Baldur’s Gate is here for several reasons. First off, it’s a great 2D RPG, and in that way, I pay tribute to BioWare – the one that did outstanding projects, not the current pathetic parody of it. Secondly, the Canadians were the first to take on the “adaptation” of the D&D tabletop series. The game became the most real revolution in the genre. Check out titles like Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity. As you can see, the mechanics of paused real-time tactical combat are still popular. Therefore, Baldur’s Gate played excellent even in 2020.

Thirdly, The developers adapt them for modern hardware and resolutions – and now, Baldur’s Gate is comfortable to play even in 4K. You can also take the second part of the game. Also, pay attention to the EE versions of Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, and Planescape: Torment – these iconic RPGs have also been modernized, which is good news.

The original Baldur’s Gate amuses us with a plot without cliches – the motivation of the main villain will become clear only at the very end. The main characters in the game are not pawns, and any of your careless actions will lead to the fact that they simply leave you. Finally, magical battles take place on a large and exciting section of the Forgotten Realms. Not surprisingly, fans are eagerly awaiting the third installment due out this year. Surely there will be many references to previous episodes of Baldur’s Gate. Hence, fourthly, must be fully prepared for the release of the third party.

Note: the game runs at a constant frame rate of 30 frames per second. The description for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition says that the program does not support Intel integrated graphics. However, the game ran quite smoothly on a system with Pentium G4600.

⇡#Dragon age origins

Brief information:

  • Release date – 2009.
  • Genre – RPG.
  • System Requirements – Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 3850 or higher.
  • Platform – Steam, 999 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 91/100.

Once upon a time, EA and BioWare worked together to produce some great games. Dragon Age Origins is one of them, but we can’t fail to mention the Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Recently, however, something went wrong with this couple. It cannot look at Projects like Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem without tears. And recently, there were rumors that BioWare is developing the next part of Mass Effect. I don’t even know if the fans of the franchise should be happy or sad now. What do you think?

Dragon Age Origins was beautiful, and it has many features from previous BioWare games. The typical fantasy plot on a complex world. The game on various topics, including religion, magic, and racism, all conveyed through the dialogues of a frankly motley company that the player accompanied. You can read more about this game in our review.

The second and third parts of Dragon Age, in my opinion, do not deserve close study.

Brief information:

  • Release date – 2012.
  • The genre is stealth action.
  • System Requirements – Dual Core CPU, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 or better.
  • Platform – Steam, 349 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 91/100.

The plot of Dishonored takes place in the fictional city of Dunwall. The lord protector of the state, Corvo Attano, returns, trying to no avail to find a cure for the plague that has spread to the nearby lands. Quite a hot topic. And then the protagonist is waiting for betrayal, palace coups, and interesting acquaintances – including with otherworldly forces.

Overall, the storyline in Dishonored is interesting, but its most vital feature is its gameplay. If you want to see a bright future, it is better to act secretly. By investing money and runes on the way in stealth abilities and improvements, Corvo will learn to move entirely silently, see enemies through walls and teleport long distances. With such an arsenal, you can go through the whole game without killing anyone at all“. In general, the game has excellent replayability. However, a good ending is considered canon – this is an essential point if you later play the second part of Dishonored.

Dishonored is developed by Victor Antonov, who also worked on the appearance of Half-Life 2. Indeed, the game looks great even after eight years: an atmospheric port city in England’s style in the late 19th century, steampunk mechanisms, dark magic, and the depressing effects of the plague.

Disciples II: Rise of the Elves

Brief information:

  • Release date – 2003.
  • Genre – turn-based strategy.
  • Pentium II, 64 MB RAM, DirectX 7.1
  • Platform – Steam, GOG, 169 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 84/100.

How did the turn-based strategy genre end up dead? I am now starting this in all seriousness. Can you name at least a couple of the best turn-based strategy games released in, say, the last three years? And so that it was not “Civilization.” So fans of the genre have to play Heroes of Might & Magic III and Disciples II – the cult TBS of their heyday.

It’s not enough to buy the Steam version of Disciples II: Rise of the Elves. The game will start on the Windows 10 operating system but will prolong. The gaming service itself is not in any way concerned with the quality of the product sold. Fortunately, Dis has an active fanbase that has solved many problems – now can run the game at least in 8K resolution. Take a look here if you plan to play Disciples II comfortably.

“Second Students” got into this article because the fans, even in 2020, have not abandoned their favorite game. Enthusiasts release cards and even sagas – while many of them correspond to the canons, that is, they complement the so-called Lore games. I will say more: some stories surpass the standard Disov campaigns in terms of elaboration. Be warned, returning to Nevendaar will result in the loss of hundreds of hours of your life.

Can download the various map from And for Disciples II, there is the so-called “Norwegian Salmon Mod” (a search engine to help). Many new units, items. And now the good old Disciples II appears before you as a completely new and utterly unexplored game. What could be cooler?

Grand theft auto iii

Brief information:

  • Release date – 2002.
  • The genre is an open-world action game.
  • System requirements – Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, video card with 32 MB VRAM.
  • Platform – Steam, 399 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 93/100.

I am sure that they will write that GTA Vice City is better in this article’s comments. Well, so be it. However, the author of the article, taking advantage of his official position, chooses exactly the third part of the great car thieves. First, it came out earlier. Secondly, in my opinion, the harsh, gloomy, and never welcoming Liberty City is better suited for the crime drama genre.

Those who have not played must play. And then you can walk around Vice City.

Well, how not remember that the games in the series are a vast springboard for modders. Hmm, and this is a topic for another article.

Assassin’s Creed Director’s Cut Edition

Brief information:

  • 2008- Release date
  • The genre is an open-world action game.
  • Fortunately, the card supporting DirectX 9/10. System requirements – Pentium D, 2 GB
  • Platform – Steam, 59
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 81/100.

Today the Assassin’s Creed series has as many as 11 games. The first part released in 2007, and the last (at the moment, and there will probably be more) – on October 5, 2018. The last part – Odyssey – was recognized as generally successful. However, Assassin’s Creed Unity does not even pull the role of the middle peasant. The second part of “Assassin’s Creed” is considered cult – and deservedly so.

However, in this article, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the first part of Assassin’s Creed if you suddenly did not do it.

Brief information :

  • Release date – 2007.
  • The genre is action.
  • System requirements – Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT or better.
  • Platform – Steam, GOG, 419 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 96/100.

I already talked about the first Portal and Assassin’s Creed. However, this year also saw the first STALKER, the second episode of Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, the first The Witcher, and Mass Effect. As you can see, the cool 2007 releases alone will be enough to create another collection. And what is most interesting, against the background of all these AAA projects, the action game BioShock, released in the same year, is not lost at all. Instead, the opposite is true.

Please note that game clients are now selling remastered versions of BioShock, with additional content and improved graphics. However, by purchasing such a game, you will get access to the classic “Bioshock.”

Max Payne

Brief information :

  • Release date – 2001.
  • The genre is action.
  • System requirements – 450 MHz single-core CPU, 128 MB of RAM, video card with 16 MB of memory, and supporting DirectX 8.
  • Platform – Steam, 399 rubles.
  • Evaluation Metacritic – 89/100.

At one time, a disc’s appearance with Max Payne forced me to install two Windows on the computer at once – because the game categorically did not want to run on Windows XP. Meanwhile, all the guys in the yard only talked about the cool effect of time dilation in this game. Nowadays, you can’t surprise anyone with the slow-motion effect, but in 2001 this “trick” made Max Payne special and unique.

Simultaneously, the game pays attention to small things: you can interact with many objects that come across to you along the way. And that’s the whole point of the Finnish studio Remedy. Even now, playing Control, Alan Wake, or Quantum Break, you feel that these projects have a lot in common: cinematography, attention to detail, revealing the main characters. Indeed, Sami Järvi, better known as Sam Lake, wrote the scripts for these games. And it was he who gave the appearance to Max.

The first part of Max Payne has a solid plot that makes you empathize with the main character of the story. Possibly the best noir game ever made. The second and third parts are also strongly recommended for passing if, for some reason, you have not done this before. Even though the Vancouver division made it of Rockstar, even the third part showed us that very Max.

Therefore, it is not surprising if this list does not include a single game you once liked. Well, let’s make this article even better: tell us in the comments about your favorite games, which, even decades later, work correctly under the control of modern computer hardware and software.
